It was a stunning blow to the Global Warming Lobby last week when their much ballyhooed Cap and Trade Bill was pulled.
This week they are licking their wounds, but that doesn't mean they are down for the count. They are spinning this as some kind of victory and are saying, just wait untill next year when Obama is at the helm.
Eric Pooley of Time Magazine says:
most environmental groups found reason to be cheerful. "We have taken comprehensive global warming legislation farther than it has ever gone before," ..."A national limit on global warming pollution is inevitable."
He went on to say:
Most Americans want action on climate change, and many important figures from the business, religious and national security communities have stepped forward with urgent calls as well. The Supreme Court has ruled that the EPA can regulate carbon emissions, and the presidential candidates favor a mandatory cap. So it's just a matter of time before Congress gets the job done, right?
And he is right on these points, so if we think we've won the war on the Global Warming issue we are from from that. If we have a few hot days this summer (hot days in summer? OH NO!!) and a greater than average amount of storms, guess what will be blamed, Global Warming. Even though this has been the coldest 2 years in a decade.
I think the real reason the bill was pulled on Friday was because on that same day, oil and gas hit a new record price and the stock market crashed, and everyone knew it would be political suicide to vote for the biggest tax hike in history on that particular day.
I also think its interseting that they are blaming the few brave Republicans who were against this bill, for pulling a parliamentary maneuver, just because they read the bill outloud, all 500 pages. Doesn't that tell you something? I think all bills before congress should be read outloud before being voted on. Then maybe our government would be less bloated.
